Throughout most of my career I have never worked in a situation where considering a global perspective was needed or necessary to be successful. As I've grown in my career, I now work for a company that is slowly expanding into other countries to develop their business. Taking TWC 535 helped me to grow my perspective on how documents and materials need to be developed in order to be useful to people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. I have never considered how someone from another state, country, or continent might view my work, but this class had me confront those ideas for the first time in my academic and work career.
This artifact was my final project for this course. I had to take an existing assignment and reframe it to be better suited for a global audience. In regard to my threshold concept, I had to enter this project with the mindset of, "What would an international or global user need in this project to be able to reach the same end result as any user that has the same background as myself?" With this mindset, I was able to take the same document displayed in Artifact 1 and make edit suggestions to it in order to better serve a wider audience.
Through completing this project I grew as a technical communicator. I worked for the first time to really analyze the language I chose to use to eliminate any confusing wording that would struggle to be clearly translated into other languages. While this document is still not a better design overall, the writing itself was further developed to better suit a diverse audiences needs. In doing this exercise, I began to view all of my projects from this viewpoint of ensuring that my language was clear, concise, and efficient, even in documents that were not planned to be translated. This better suits the users overall in that they can easily access the materials I develop.
